This book/workbook is therapeutic crack! There is so much information packed into this little workbook it is amazing. Anyone who has ever struggled with the problem of "ok I know what I have here but now what do I do with it?" must must must read this book. Masterson's entire published works are all very good on their own but this gives you a glimpse into all of the works complied into one book. Obviously, not nearly as extensive of a look as you would get from the original texts but very good and very clear to the reader. The workbook gives you great directives on how to conduct your therapy and make it as effective as it can be given the diagnoses you are dealing with at the time. This book is very helpful and a must have for anyone who is in therapy with Axis II individuals. My one critique is one that I don't think could be avoided given the depth of information provided in so few pages but I feel it deserves to be mentioned. This book is incredibly dense to read. Each paragraph, page, and chapter is rich with information and thus making it a slow read (at least for me) when you are reading for memory and comprehension. This isn't a light read by any means, but if you take your time and take it seriously it is a great tool for any therapist.

This is a book worth puschasing by therapists of almost any persuasion;it summarizes the late Dr Masterson's work extending over decades, starting with Borderline disorders but later being extended to Narcissistic and then Schizoid disorders...all these being seen as basically disorders of the self, which Masterson saw somewhat differently than Kohut, the originator of the Psychology of the Self. The three clusters do not coincide with the DSMlV terminology, but cover all the personality disorders in that system. Thus the histrionic,dependent,passive-aggressive and compulsive personalities are subsumed by the Borderline disorders, characterized by clinging or distancing, with the main wish dominating their psyches being to be cared for.The Narcissistic type has several sub-types,the main wish is to seek idealizable or mirroring objects.A desire for safety with the dominent fear of manipulation and appropriation characterizes the Schizoid disorders which cover not only the DSMIV schizoid but also avoidant.paranoid personalities etc..The appropriate interventions are confrontation with the destructive consequences of actions for the Borderline pathology, interpretation of oversensitivity on the part of Narcissistic individuals and of the conflict around closeness, the so-called schizoid dilemma, for the Schizoid.Even if the diagnosis is uncertain,or possibly a mixed picture at various levels, these interventions can be useful whenever the relevant pathology seems to be in the foreground and thus can sharpen the diagnostic differences as the responses to the interventions tend to be different for each cluster. The clinical illustrations are clearly presented, although in places one wishes for more clarity and explanations. For instance,it is not made clear as far as I could tell, what the diffenrces are between the "fused" part-units of the nacissist versus the split units in the other two types, especially since splitting is a defense mechanism in all of the self disorders. All in all, a good start to get acquainted with the work of this tireless and dedicated psychiatrist who has not received the recognition he deserves from many establishment figures.

Should have read this long ago. I always had major concerns regarding psychotherapy, and consider myself largely in the cognitive behavioral camp. However, this text has helped me see the error of my ways. This is essential understanding for the much neglected Axis II diagnoses.Furthermore, until now I never knew how truly screwed up I am. Medical school syndrome aside, I now have a much deeper understanding of humanity and the human condition. As a developmental psych professor, a therapist, and an author - I thank you Dr. Masterson. Buy this book if you are a graduate level student or professional in the field.

Therapists today have a serious problem:lack of direction. Millions of people who suffer with symptoms of personality disorders are deprived of help. Therapists today provide "talk" ,"paid pseudofriendship" and an illusion that includes waste of time money and hope. This small volume,if read seriously can make a deep difference in giving therapists understanding and direction in tratment of most patients who are in therapy today. The initial focus on diagnosis and differential diagnosis is a must.Just the understanding of the concept of abandonment depression alone is a gift to any practicing therapist. It is so common yet goes unrecognized at a high cost to those who suffer. The therapeutic approach including knowing when to use miroring vs confrontation is essential. Dr Masterson deserves a gold medal. Other contributors have my admiration for their wisdom and openess in writing this gem.

Excellent book and guide for a Therapist

This book was awaited. The Masterson approach is a model which recognizes the personality disorders based on failure of developmental milestones. It is about how persons relates to themselves and others; not their defense mechanisms as in the DSM.Best of all, the Masterson psychotherapy works. Clinical research is not needed to assess its efficacy because such scientific endeavor does not respect the complexities and subtleties realities of real life. The mastery of Mastery approach takes years of training, but it is worth and we owe it to our patients. This model truly helps individuals go beyond their developmental arrest, in depth. This is the only synthesis addressing the complexities of personality disorders: psychopatic, schizoid, narcissistic, and borderline.

Amazing book!!!
