About the Author
Josh S. Cutler is an attorney and state legislator representing the Sixth Plymouth District of Massachusetts, which includes the town of Hanson. Cutler is a graduate of Skidmore College (BA), Suffolk Law (JD) and the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (MPP in environmental policy). He is also the author of "When the Press Really Was Under Attack: Alexander Hanson and the 1812 'Mobtown' Massacre," published by the New England Journal of History (Spring 2018).

The many illustrations give you a real sense of the life and times, viewed through the lens of the press.In many ways foreshadowing the toxic political arena in America today, it spotlights the importance of a free and independent press, and a shining example of political courage.I found it to be a great read!
Josh Cutler's account of the man and the mob and the principles from which the town of Hanson, Massachusetts, took its name, Mobtown Massacre, is a gripping account of the Baltimore riot, jailbreak (in), beatings and butchery that crippled newspaper publisher Alexander Contee Hanson and led to his death in 1819. It's a lesser-known piece of history that brings the issue of freedom of the press to the forefront at a time when freedom of the press is a topic of much national debate. Another Federalist, along with Hamilton and Adams, who put his principles above popularity. Good read.
This new arrival comes at a time when Baltimore still suffers from riots and racial divide, as well as the challenges faced by our larger cities in particular. Well researched and clearly presented.
Sounds like a story ripped from today's headlines, but it was actually an incident in the War of 1812. This book captures the feeling like you are watching the mob tear down the newspaper building and seeing the ensuing chaos that leads to numerous injuries (including General Robert E. Lees's father) and one death. Very interesting, fast read. Quite topical and relevent given recent events. Must read for any one interested in the history of freedom of the press!
Josh Cutler has written an excellent study of an early test of freedom of the press. The War of 1812 was very unpopular in northern states. When journalist Alexander Hanson wrote an editorial against the war, his office and printing press was destroyed by an angry mob. The resulting confrontations resulting in bloodshed and lose of life. He stood his ground on the principle of freedom of the press and was eventually vindicated. Cutler's carefully researched book is an important insight into a little-know, but immensely important, test of the First Amendment. I recommend it in the strongest possible terms.
History is a welcome teacher. This fast-paced and compelling account of the bloody 1812 newspaper riots reads like a work of popular fiction, but It’s clearly based on painstaking research and a careful attention to detail. I enjoyed learning more about Alexander Hanson and the early days of American newspapers when the freedom of the press was fought with pencils and pistols.
Lively and very readable account of one of the nation’s earliest and most notorious attacks on the free press. Hanson is not a well-known figure in history books, but this book does remarkable job shining light on his remarkable, if erratic, career and the massacre that launched it. Not your typical dry history book.
