This book does not accurately cover the information on the LPI Linux Essentials Certification. I passed that exam yesterday, and this just isn't the book you want. I don't really know what this was written for, but my guess would be that it was written as a generic introduction to Linux, and then slapped with a new title for this certification. After taking that exam, I can't imagine the author wrote this book having taken that test.It doesn't even work well as an introduction to Linux, unless you are also new to computers. Which is a crazy concept to me, who starts using Linux before they've learned what a "hard drive" is? I'm guessing no one ever, but this book does go into some detail about things like that.I wouldn't be so angry at this book except that it took time away from better resources for this exam, which makes this book a liability. You'll find the proper book for this certification by doing a search for "Linux Essentials The LPI Introductory Programme."Good luck on your test.P.S. Oh, the practice exam is also bad.

If you are looking at becoming lpi certified you will need more than just this book but if you're looking to get into Linux this book is a excellent book to begin with because the author is writing the book the n00b. The book is well laid out with each chapter taking you deeper and deeper into linux. I want to caution the new to linux user about the exercises, the exercises have openSuSe linux in mind and 99% of the wxercises will work in the current version of OpenSuSe but they may not translate well into other distributions of linux.ProsGreat structureWell writtenThe software comes with a pdf copy of the book, which is great for anytime study.ConsNot enough examplesDoes not tell the reader about other flavors of linux.The test software is lacking.

I found the book overall to be good, though it was not my favorite book in the series; I found other books in the ALL-IN-ONE series to be more well rounded. One of my main objections with the book was with the balance of detail between the various sections and chapters. I found that some sections seemed to be glossed over where more information could have made it more understandable, and other sections that could have been shortened. Your experience may be different based upon your knowledge going into the book. I would still consider myself a novice when it comes to Linux, but I would say that I’m much more well rounded after have read this book. I now have a better understanding of the things within the Linux world and am even looking at other books to expand upon this newly acquired skillset.

Clear and concise information. There are a handful of errors in the questions that appear to be editing mistakes, but the information is really good. I didn't think I would learn much since I have been using Linux for many years, and this book/certification is supposed to be elementary; however, I have actually learned several things by studying this material. If you plan on going into Linux Admin work or taking on Linux support in your business, I would highly recommend this book and certification. Not sure how much it will help the career, but it will certainly help you understand more of the nuts and bolts of Linux.

Easy to read, easy to follow. Examples make sense, and you can understand the subject matter by the end of each chapter.

If you have never touched or used Linux, this is a book you can use to start your journey. While I also had another book with this as a beginner, it's great for a beginner and assumes no prior knowledge.

It's very disappointing to realize that the user could not be working on exercises at the command line or in a Linux window, but not be able to get online in the same session and do the exam. Windows Internet Explorer is not available on any version of Linux, so you can't get satisfaction at all. Use Linux but don't use Linux for the online exam. Unbelievably, when I spoke with technical support at the company who wrote the exam, they told me to phone the book publisher. Calling the book publisher found them telling me, eventually, to call the exam publisher. They also said that even though the copyright date is 2006, it does have more recent material in it. I have no confidence in that statement; would you?>>>>> CONTENT REVIEW <<<<< Since the initial review, I read more than 150 pages and can see that Mr. Tracy's writing style and presentation methods do not suit my way of learning. I found it frustrating to learn his way and I felt like I was in a time warp back to 2006. For example, he tells us about a CRT monitor that smoked, popped and was ruined from bad settings. Have you seen a CRT anywhere in the past five years? Where would you buy a new one today? Worse yet, the coverage of material leaves me waiting for connections and relevance too often. For example, Chapter 3 is on PC Hardware, but other than four very short paragraphs in the beginning, he spends 50 pages talking about the hardware in excruciating detail without any reference to Linux at all. What's the point? Why? How does this connect to running and administrating Linux? Same for the next chapter. A sixth of the book spent without relevance? I'm sorry, but I can't abide that much time without connections to Linux. I also found cases where he assumed too much in the first five chapters, mentioning processes without any previous discussion about them and not saying that they would be discussed later. It doesn't do much for me to say that "Just like everything else Linux, your X configuration is stored in the /etc directory." Background information is necessary, but omitted too often. Therefore, I must deduct another star. This book may be good for others, but it didn't work for me. I *am* returning it, posthaste. I'm buying other books to get what I need for the LPI Essentials exam, then.
