Just so you know, if you already own the earlier Kafka/Kuper collection Give It Up! And Other Short Stories, the same nine stories in that book also appear in this collection, along with five new Kafka adaptations by Kuper. The new ones are among the best (and longest) yet though, so still worth having for the serious Kafka and/or Kuper fan. Particularly noteworthy were the new adaptations "The Burrow" and "In the Penal Colony". If your interest is more marginal and you already own the previous collection, then you may want to pass on this one.
This graphic short stories, by Peter Kuper, ARE by turns paradoxical, macabre, comic, allegorical and indeed--Kafkaesque. Kuper is inspired by a master of woodblock prints, Lynn Ward, author of God's Man (1929) Madman's Drum (1930) and Vertigo (1937), all of which I have loved since by luck finding them in my dad's library in boyhood (though Kuper's tales, unlike Ward's, include words). Kuper also cites influence by the German expressionist artists Käthe Kollwicz, Georg Grosz and Otto Dix. However, Kuper uses scratchboard, a modern and less laborious technique than Ward's wood cutting (though seemingly equally effective). You will find particularly moving and memorable his dark tales, "Before the Law" and "In the Penal Colony."
