The Apprenticeby Tess Gerritsen'The Apprentice', by Tess Gerritsen, is the second of the Rizzoli and Isles series. When Rizzoli finally puts Warren Hoyt, otherwise known as The Surgeon, in prison for life, she thought that she was through with him. Just like 'The Surgeon', which was first of this series, 'The Apprentice' is a real page turner.Detective Rizzoli gets called into a string of murders because the MO is the same as her old nemesis, Warren Hoyt. Hoyt, the man of her nightmares.Hoyt. The man who pinned her to the floor with a scapel in both of her hands. Hoyt. The devil incarnate.Even from his prison cell, it seems as though he was still killing. A copycat? Doubtful. Jane Rizzoli believed that Hoyt had somehow engineered these murders. Every detail was there, from the teacup on the husband's knee to the folded nightgown in the bedroom. It was Hoyt all over. Jane gets the courage up to face Hoyt in prison. She is looking for some answers to questions that would help her solve these murders. Hoyt, who is obsessed with Jane, was pleased that she had come to him, but was no help, of course. Maura Isles, the Medical Examiner, helps to keep her best friend, Jane, on an even keel, working tirelessly to find this maniacal killer. Every murder that Jane worked in the case, brings more memories of Hoyt to her mind.We see the world through Rizzoli's eyes and feel the hate that she has for the one man that she cannot get out of her life, Hoyt. Ms. Gerritsen has done it again. I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Apprentice' and gave it 5 stars. I am looking forward to more of Rizzoli and Isles books.

This is a re-read for me because I'm reading this series with a group of buddies on GoodReads. Originally I'd read the first six books in the series way back when each of them had been released and time tends to make specifics a little hazy. This makes for practically brand new experiences with re-reads. So yay for that! Boo on not remembering what I did yesterday. The Good: As super villainous Hoyt was in the last book I wasn't sure how Gerritsen would come up with an equally bad guy for her second go round in this series. She did it. She did it in a wicked gruesome way. I loved every nasty, bloody, disgustingly evil thing our villains did in this book. You read that right, kids. Villains. Plural.Jane Rizzoli is totally in the good column in this second book. In the first book her abrasive personality grates. In this one she mellows and becomes likable even. She is no one's victim even after being victimized. Those who might not have liked her in the first book should have no problem warming up to her in this one. Oh and for those of you wondering where Isles is....well, this second book is still all about Rizzoli. The Bad: As a warning, new to this series readers really need to read The Surgeon first. Not many people would think this is a bad thing but I do. I like to be able to grab a book and read it without having to worry about if I'm reading a book in the proper order. This is just a peeve of mine and some who insist on reading series books in order will have already read The Surgeon so no harm no foul.In a Nutshell: Such a good second book. If you love Thrillers and haven't started this series you really need to. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

This book was just as captivating as the first (the surgeon). If like me you watch the tv series this is reminiscent of the first episode season 1. But although the two have similar storylines thats as far as it goes the apprentice is a totally new adventure.Rizzoli's character gets fleshed out a bit more and also get a running romance sideline - still not sure whether this added to the story or not... but I guess it helps round of her character a little. We alos learn more about Isles's character so she is no longer a 2-dimensional character like in the Surgeon.Basically Rizzoli gets called in on a case of a serial killer who gets nicknamed the Dominator. Looking at the crime scene it eerily reminds her of another serial killer dubbed the Surgeon (aka Warren Hoyt) who she was primarily responsible for capturing in book-1. We meet FBI Agent Gabriel Dean who turns up like the proverbial FBI bad-penny - he gets access to the investigation but gives no reason why he is on the case (tho we do find out he has some top brass behind him opening doors so to speak... )and to top it off he knows where to look for evidence and again gives no reason why/how he knows... which really brings up the question who is the Dominator?! And just when you think our heroes might have a handle on the situation Hoyt escapes from his prison and now it looks like the Surgeon and the Dominator have not only hooked up...they have Rizzoli in their crosshairs...There is no you MUST read the first book before this one...there is enough information that this could stand alone as a different adventure however as with most running series it helps with the character carry over from one to the next. A prime example is the reason why the Surgeon wants Rizzoli. Its a pretty good page turner - took me a day to finish - totally worth the read and absolutely recommended.

Jane Rizzoli, the terrific detective character created by Tess Gerritsen, is back in the second Rizzoli & Isles book. Beginning a year after the resolution of The Surgeon, Rizzoli is tormented by a copycat killer. At first, she's the only one who sees the parallels, including an FBI agent who arrives uninvited. The autopsy work by Dr. Isles proves her right, and puts her in danger.Rizzoli is a complex and troubled woman, struggling for acceptance in a male-dominated profession. She feels forced to deal with her fears and doubts alone, in spite of offers of help from friends. Ms. Gerritsen has crafted another excellent mystery, including her trademark medical knowledge. Tense, fast-paced, and well written. Five stars all the way.
