Alexander Golitzin is professor emeritus of patristics at Marquette University and a bishop of the Orthodox Church in America. Reading Dionysius without a guide is a perilous endeavor. This is a tough read, but well worth the effort.

This book draws together and synthesizes work that Father (now Bishop) Golitzin has been doing on Dionysius the Areopagite for many years. It's essential for anyone who wishes to understand Dionysius within his native cultural context, that of the Bible and the Greek Fathers.
The previous work Bp. Golitzin, including his masterful material in Et introibo ad altare dei, is here drawn out and extended. He shows how the Incarnation is at the center of everything, and how Dionysius faithfully transposes Holy Tradition, especially from the background of Syrian monastic desert theology, through the lens of Neoplatonism, correcting it and effectively communicating the reality of union with God by means of His activities ("Energies"), in the context of His Church and her sacramental life. The massive amount of work published in recent years on Temple symbolism, theology, and models (by scholars like G. K. Beale, Steven Smith, and L. Michael Morales), when coordinated with Golitzin's work, opens up vistas refreshingly wide and deep indeed!
