“Engrossing. . . . A masterful account of the drama and science of scouting [and] a lively evocation of football mania in Africa.†- The Economist“Masterfully weaves together the stories of boys from a renowned soccer academy in Doha in an illuminating narrative.†- Sports Illustrated“Follows a group of teenagers plucked from the dirt fields of Africa and swept up in the international soccer machine for a chance at stardom.†- Men's Journal“A sobering look at the realities of the pursuit of big-time sporting opportunities.†- Kirkus (starred review)“[The Away Game] follows the fortunes of three young African players who participated in the Qatari [Football Dreams] program and for whom soccer represented a ticket out of poverty. . . . An excellent introduction to this shady world.â€â€ - Nicolas van de Walle, Foreign Affairs“Every fan of international soccer must read The Away Game. It shows how soccer stars are made, and it captures the desperation and the pain behind African footballers’ search for fame and money in the Middle East and Europe.†- Helon Habila, author of Oil on Water and The Chibok Girls“What a fantastic story: a soccer-themed mix of Hoop Dreams and The Sports Gene, told with surpassing empathy for the boys of Senegal, Ghana, and other African countries involved. Totally recommend this book to anyone with even a passing interest in soccer, Africa, the Middle East and sports in general. Beautifully written, it is a page turner that takes you into the heart of an epic, international search for soccer's elusive next superstar. You meet the coaches and the kids, who dream big and yet too often come up against the harsh realities of life. The conclusion? That growing up in poverty in Africa is immeasurably stacked against you, but that strength of character and determination can sometimes do more than raw talent in realising your full potential.
Engrossing book that starts with simple parallel stories, and then pulls you into the dynamic and complex world of professional soccer and youth development. I had been familiar w the US AAU basketball model, but the soccer system is much murkier, especially with the overlay of major invested dollars by governments to build national pride/prominence. I enjoyed the learnings on Africa and the Middle East as well...cultures overlapping as one views soccer as the opportunity for a “way out†of poverty and the other as the way to social cohesion and glory.A fast, well-written read which evidences considerable research throughout. We are now also reading it to our son, who loves sports. A great book.
I loved this book! I'm not a huge soccer fan, but much to my surprise, that didn't really matter at all. This book is as much about soccer and the science behind finding the next big star, as it is a human interest story about the plight of millions of young boys in Africa hoping to make their dreams come true on the international soccer field. I found myself unable to put it down, wondering who wins the big match, who gets selected for the team and what happens when things don't work out. This book is very easy to read, the stories are incredibly engaging and the details so vividly described that I often found myself forgetting whether this is fact or fiction! I cannot wait to give this book as a gift to my dad (who will be most interested in the recruiting process and the search to find the next Lionel Messi), my niece (who is an avid sportswoman and may pick up a lesson or two about perseverance and drive along the way) and my husband (who simply loves soccer and Manchester United)!
It took me a while and a few attempts to find a groove with this book. The somewhat non-linear approach can be a bit disorienting, with abrupt shifts in gear from vivid tapestries of dusty African soccer fields to intense scientific analysis of the game. Roll with the punches. It all makes sense in the end. This book pulled me in head and heart in equal measure. Anyone who has ever dreamed of making the big time will be moved and educated by this story.
I loved this book! The combination of sports science, geo-political conflict and the business of sports was fascinating. Plus you find yourself rooting hard for the three young players the author focuses on....
Loved this book! Intertwining sports, international politics, African culture and the dreams of many young athletes! The story seems destined for the silver screen!
Great read. If you enjoyed The Boys in the Boat, Moneyball, any Sebastian Junger or Malcolm Gladwell then you'll appreciate this book.
This book is incredibly interesting and an overall good read. If you are a devoted soccer follower, it is a must read.
